I have always been fascinated by repeated shapes, communication without words and insects!
These three themes came together when I created this image.
These insects, go by many names, Butcher Boys, Slaters, Potato Bugs but no matter the name, they have always reminded me of morse code, rolled up they are the dots, when walking they are the dashes.
I wanted to represent this idea without having to spell it out, so I used the most universally known letters S O S.
The humour of the little guy struggling at the bottom and the “rescue team” heading off sending out the international call for help seemed quite fitting during the worlds recent lockdowns.
